Tips
OUR TOP TEN PRESERVATION AND STORAGE TIPS! That Special Moment brings you a list of its top ten ‘do nots’ when storing garments that will assist with their longevity.
- Do not store your dress in plastic dress covers.
They are suitable for hanging your dress before the wedding or occasion, but not for the long-term. These plastic covers let light in which causes the colour to fade, they do not allow for humidity changes leading to mould and condensation forming and these covers actually disintegrate themselves over the years which leads to particles dropping onto your dress.
- Do not hang your dress on a hanger.
This causes stress on the seams of the fabric causing it to stretch over time and eventually to lose its original shape.
- Do not store your dress in a normal cardboard box.
Unless of course that box is made with special acid-free board. All standard boxes contain acid that passes into the dress fabric causing discolouration or yellowing.
- Do not store your dress in wardrobes, drawers or suitcases.
These will all have an effect on the fabric of any garment over time. Wedding dresses are particularly vulnerable. These areas contain acid that passes into the dress fabric causing discolouration or yellowing. Storing items in a wardrobe, drawer, suitcase or bag will all have an effect on the fabric of a dress specifically if it comes into direct contact with it. Be certain therefore to separate the garment by surrounding it in an acid free medium.
- Do not wrap the dress in any paper such as the tissue paper found in gifting stores, or newspaper except plain white acid-free paper. All coloured tissue contains dye that will affect the colour of the garment.
- Do not store anything in direct sunlight or bright light. Light will discolour the garment.
- Do not use any standard form of pressure sensitive tape or adhesive tape when wrapping your dress in our box. This may affect the acidity and PH levels of the materials.
- Do not fold the dress excessively. This may result in unwanted creases.
- Do not store your dress in an attic or anywhere where it could get wet. In this way you will avoid mould and damage to the box.
- Do not overfill your box. This may result in it not sealing properly thereby jeopardising the integrity of our product.
